Datsun Coil Over Build
ery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=684&g2_GALLERYSID=TMP_SESSION_ID_DI_NOISSES_PMT” alt=”DatsunCoilOver089″ width=”307″ height=”230″ />Just have a look at these. They are an absolute blast to drive with, but do believe me, it took way more time than needed to plan and source the correct parts for the build, in fact the build went off without a hint of trouble.
All parts where sourced from local RSA suppliers, in my opinion this was the hardest part of the whole build, especially the shocks.
The biggest success to the build can be coupled to good planning. My biggest single piece of advice to anyone that plans on a build like this, spend a lot of time on the planning, it makes life easier.
Parts Used:
- Datsun B140 LDV original
Struts
- Volkswagen Rabbit Shock Cartridge Inserts
- 250lbs x 8inch Race Springs
- Thread Tubes
- Retaining nuts and cap
- 14mm Rose Joints

Keep an eye out for a complete HOWTO on building a set of coil over's. The HOWTO will be based on the set in question, but will
be easily adobtable to other makes of vehicles with good planning and some forward thinking added to the mix.
I must say that this was a very interesting way to spend a weekend and that I enjoyed and where I learnt quite a lot. It was a pleasure to help with this modification. Thanks Herman!
Johan, I’m the one that need to thank you for all your help regarding this build, the time and effort that you sacrificed to accompany me to build these items.
I’m glad you learned a lot, the day you decide to build a racing car you can be sure I’ll be there to help.
Thanks a lot.
Why do you have so much body roll??? What is the spring rate? Are you going to upgrade to stiffer springs?? Tell me about the bucket seat conversion. Well done my son on your personal best although I believe you have a shot at 2nd or 3rd place just get that roll away and the LS diff is not the only option.
Body roll is due to the rear leaf pack that I removed one leaf to get the rear wheels to have more traction. Currently running 250lbs springs in the front, yes, I’m going to 350lbs springs for the front to test at Mykonos and then use 2 of your slicks in the front to get rid of the old hard slicks that I used on the back. If time is on my side after the stiffer springs is installed, I want to add a leaf back per side and see what the results will be like on fresh tyres in front and back.
Hehe, yea, the bucket seats and harnesses came after a practice session where I took Einstein for a lap and he ended on my lap and against the window, he sponsored a harness. After that I just decided to finish the job and fit the buckets to get it over with.
Hi Herman,
I am very interested in converting my stanza 1600j front suspension to the coil-over setup. But I need direction in sourcing the parts, can you assist me please.
I am also based in CAPE TOWN
regards
GAVIN
Gavin, I will be more than happy to help you with some direction on sourcing parts, so many people are all of a sudden interested in making coil overs, it looks to me that I need to buy another set of shocks and a spare set for future use.
I’m currently in the planning phase of s Double Wishbone Independent rear Suspension for my bakkie, will also make my own set of coil overs for the rear.
Gavin,
What do you use your vehicle for????
Hi Herman,
Thanks for the help, my car is currently under construction but intended use is to drift. My intention now is to invest in the front coil-over setup. Based on drift set-up research I am thinking of fitting 400lbs springs in the front, what do you think?
regards
GAVIN
Ok, now I’m with you, coil-overs is only good if you intend to use it for adjusting ride height alongside spring rate.
400lbs does not sound like a bad start, I’m going to either 350lbs or 450lbs before the next race. I need to get rid of more body roll when running on slicks or semi’s. I’m just scared of pissing blood from driving it to places like Langebaan or Worcester.
The other thing I would keep in mind, is to either upgrade your anti roll bar or fit a second one like I did to help the springs.
As far as a drift setup, I know the guys run them super hard to get the rear to brake easy.
Hell, that does not sound to bad.
Herman,
I was thinking though that I first want to build an adjustable strut like was done on the escort without the castor/camber plates. The second anti-roll bar, can perhaps put some pics on the site to see the fitment please. Lets start with the parts list and suppliers,I am freakin excited man, send me the info man.

GAVIN
Hello i am from Portugal and i like to now were can i find this coilovers for my datsun
thank you
Joao, For the Datsun’s it will be very diffucult to get pre build coil overs of the shelf due to the vehicles age. That is the reason why I build my own, I know the guys on the http://datsun1200.com site uses the Nissan S13 struts in the Datsuns.
Maybe it will be worth to have a look at that option.
